The below video shows why fielders should always clear to the inside of the baseline.
In the above situation, the runner gets second base because he was obstructed with by the short stop. If the short stop had cleared to the inside of the baseline instead of crossing the baseline to clear on the other side he would not have obstructed with the runner and the runner would likely have been out.
